I was interested to read a recent article which reviewed data from three randomised trials comparing the outcomes of keyhole mitral valve surgery with traditional breastbone break.

A total of 280 patient outcomes were included in the study. Keyhole mitral valve surgery was shown to be as safe as traditional breastbone surgery giving patients the real option of avoiding the need for invasive incisions if they need heart surgery. Furthermore, keyhole mitral valve surgery patients were discharged nearly 2 days sooner than patients undergoing traditional breastbone division.

When you consider that the incisions used in keyhole mitral valve surgery heal within 7 to 10 days compared to 12 weeks following breastbone break, it is very likely that the clinical and economic benefits of keyhole heart surgery are far greater than early hospital discharge alone. In an environment where the costs of healthcare are an increasing concern, the team at The Keyhole London Heart Clinic believe that keyhole heart surgery offers real benefits to patients, healthcare providers and commissioners of clinical services.
