Cardiac Conditions
Aortic Valve Stenosis Aortic valve stenosis occurs when the aortic valve begins to stiffen and restrict blood flow through it from the left ventricle to the body. Congenital (hereditary) aortic stenosis can occur creating problems in infancy or in later life. Symptoms include breathlessness, fainting episodes (syncope) and palpitations. Aortic Valve Regurgitation is where the aortic valve leaks when the left ventricle relaxes, where in a healthy heart it should close to prevent blood travelling back into the left ventricle. Most cases are due to a weakness in the main outflow of the heart leading to dilatation of the ring or “annulus” of the aortic valve, with symptoms including severe shortness of breath and ankle swelling.
